Calculating a roof slope? Easy with the roof slope calculator…

Are you currently wondering why and for what reason you should actually calculate the slope of the roof, roof inclination and the amount of living space below it? There are several good reasons to do this: for example, you want to check the amount of living space stated in your rental contract or you want to undertake structural work under the sloping roof or on the roof itself. With some mathematical and manual skill, measuring and, calculating the living space and working out the roof inclination is easy to do. Or maybe not? In order to avoid getting confused, we have summarised for you in this article all you need to know about calculating the slope of the roof, determining the inclination, angle and gradient, as well as the formula and calculation. And if mathematics isn't your thing, performing the calculation with the roof slope calculator is as easy as anything.

This is why you should calculate the space below a roof slope!

There are several reasons why you should measure and calculate your roof slope. On the one hand, you might want to check the area used for living in a rental contract, you might want to use the calculation for structural work, such as wallpapering or making changes to shelves under the slope, or you might want to calculate the yield of a photovoltaic system on the roof.

You want to rent a loft apartment

Once their children have moved out, many homeowners decide to renovate the living space on their first or second floor and rent it out to generate an extra source of income. If there is no roof slope in these rooms, calculating the square metres exactly is easy. But in most cases, the first floor is a loft and so a sloping roof will affect the calculation of the square metres. Angle of inclination, degree of the gradient in percent, height, surface area... what was the magic formula again? If your school days are long behind you, calculating a roof inclination is not easy. And although the Internet is full of explanatory videos and tutorials, you find out quickly that the angle of inclination (and measuring it correctly) is a source of frequent errors. As a future landlord, you do not want this to happen to you.

You are starting building work

Calculating the inclination of the roof, the angles and the length of the slope are of great importance in particular when you want to start structural work in the loft. Every degree and every percent is important in the exact formula. Using the formula helps with, for example, calculating the cut of a wallpaper or the yield of a photovoltaic system on your roof. You do not need to calculate the surface area to do these, but the inclination of the roof is important. You can also calculate the angle of inclination of the roof as well.

You want to make the most of living space in loft apartments

Living under a sloping roof has an unmistakable charm. However, the angles and uneven wall surface area again and again pose almost unsolvable problems in terms of how best to use these rooms. For example, that 2 x 2 metre wardrobe? It sticks out like a sore thumb as it only goes in the nicest part of the room. The bookshelves that are actually a little too far to the left? The roof slope does not allow them to be placed anywhere else. However, you are prepared to make compromises to a certain extent. Compromises like built-in cabinets are ideal. If the furniture does not fit the sloping roof, then change the furniture so it does! To do this, you need to determine the degree of inclination in percent and the angle of inclination precisely, so that the carpenter can produce tailor-made furniture.

Not all square metres are the same: height is crucial!

The roof slope calculator is often used to calculate the square metreage of the living area. This because when it comes to loft apartments or apartments with sloping roofs, not every metre below the slope counts fully towards calculating the rent. If you live in a rented apartment with sloping roofs, you should check the amount of living space with the help of the roof slope calculator. According to the German Living Area Ordinance (Woflv), the height decides the percentage at which the living space may be charged in a rental contract:
  • Rooms with a height of at least two metres are included in their entirety in the living space and are charged for rent accordingly.
  • Areas under a roof slope of one to two metres are calculated as 50% of the living space and are charged for rent accordingly.
  • Areas under a roof slope of less than one metre are not considered as living space and are not charged for rent at all.
  • You can calculate areas below stairs in an apartment according to the same principle.

The gradient is crucial for determining the surface area

When calculating the living space, it is generally true that the steeper the angle of inclination, the more living space can be declared. Watch out for loft apartments that are still under shell construction; the thickness of the ceiling panelling that has not yet been placed onto the roof beams must be deducted from the dimensions.

This is how you measure your roof slope!

It is important to know that you have to calculate each roof slope individually. The roof inclination is often the same for gable roofs, but the length can vary. It's time to measure. Here you can use a trick that will make it easier for you to measure and calculate. In your imagination, divide the room into two parts where the roof inclination begins. The space below the roof slope can be treated as a right-angled triangle. Now measure the height at the lowest point and at the highest point. Also measure the horizontal distance between these two points on the floor. You now know the right and left sides of the right-angled triangle and so you can now calculate the two other angles and thus also the angle of inclination, or simply use the roof slope calculator.

Do these formulas for roof inclination, roof surface area, Pythagoras’ theorem and the like make your hair stand on end? Then we can let you in on a little secret: use the online roof slope calculator. It calculates the areas under your roof and gives you a ready-to-print result in a heartbeat. You only need a few measurements: the width, height and depth of the room, as well as the width of the straight ceiling and the height of the flap tile. You will then get all the results of the calculation. The roof slope calculator provides easy and quick assistance. Give it a try at https://dachschraegenrechner.de/EN/roofslopecalculator.php.
